The discipline

THE GROUND GAME.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling art built on leverage, positioning and submissions. The aim is to control a training partner without relying on size or strength, which makes it one of the most useful self-defence systems you can train.

Classes cover the positions that hold the art together: guard, mount, side control and back control, along with escapes, sweeps and submissions. Switch Fitness describes its Jiu Jitsu programme as suitable for all ages and skill levels.

Who it is for

  • Adults who want to learn to grapple from the ground up.
  • People looking for a discipline that rewards patience over power.
  • Strikers who want to round out their game.
  • Anyone who wants practical self-defence.

A session

START TO
FINISH.

Every coach runs a class their own way. This is the general shape of a session — the exact drills, rounds and timing are set on the floor.

01

Warm-up

Movement drills and solo or partner mobility that prepare the hips, neck and shoulders.

02

Technique

One position or submission is broken down step by step, then drilled with a partner.

03

Specific rounds

Live drilling from the position of the day, so you learn to apply the technique against resistance.

04

Cool-down

Controlled rounds and a cool-down, with time for questions.
